December 2006: Campaign Conference - Water in the Northwest: Vision and Delivery
For water and the water environment, 2006 was a memorable year. Climate change and the drought in the Southeast focused unprecedented government, media and public attention on water as a critical issue for all of us. Europe's Water Framework Directive continued to set new and challenging targets.
How are we in the Northwest meeting the challenges and opportunities of the water environment? The answer is with ambitious projects demonstrating both breathtaking vision and successful delivery.
| VISION: | -
| | The Mersey Estuary is being studied as a source of clean, renewable
energy - the conference heard the initial results of this major new
research. | -
| |
Central Manchester and Salford will be transformed by the Irwell City
Park, a green link along the River Irwell to Salford Quays.
| -
| | And at Salford Quays, MediaCity:UK aims to become the creative hub of
more than 1000 new businesses, with a sparkling new waterfront home for
the BBC at its heart. Cllr. Derek Antrobus spoke to the conference
about these two exciting developments. |
| DELIVERY: | | - | | The Northwest continues to lead the way with innovative approaches to
the rural water environment, such as the SCAMP project, which is
building a new model for farming the nations cherished moors and fells.
United Utilities' David Crawshaw gave the conference an insight into
this innovative scheme.
| | - | |
The trans-national Artery project has brought the benefits of working
with partners in Germany and Holland to Stockport and Liverpool. Frank
Bothmann and Holger Platz, our German project partners, addressed the
conference. | -
| |
And last but not least, across the Mersey and Ribble basins, activists
and volunteers continue to improve their local environment. The
conference saw a lively open forum between speakers and audience. |
