University of Manchester
The merger between the Victoria University Of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in 2004 created the University of Manchester, which is now the biggest university in the UK. Despite this recent merger, the University’s origins can be traced back to 1824. The University is situated within the city of Manchester in Northwest England, a region that is world famous for being the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. The University has over 40000 students, supports over 15000 jobs in the region, and produces a turnover in excess of £500 million. A £300 million capital investment programme is currently ongoing, and the University is aiming to become one of the top 25 research-led academic institutions in the world. Dr. Jeremy Carter, who is contributing to the ENMaR project in partnership with the Mersey Basin Campaign, works within the School of Environment and Development, which is part of the University’s Faculty of Humanities. The School combines the disciplines of geography, planning and landscape and development policy and management, and provides a forum to unite research into economic, social and environmental dimensions of human activity. Dr. Jeremy Carter is based within the planning and landscape discipline, which has an interdisciplinary and international focus. Research at planning and landscape links town planning, landscape planning and environmental management. There is a focus on real world issues including sustainable urban development, environmental impact management and urban regeneration. Dr. Jeremy Carter is a Research Associate in environmental planning and management. His research has focused on issues including Strategic Environment Assessment, the Water Framework Directive and planning for sustainable water management.
