Mersey Basin Campaign

The Mersey Basin Campaign is a 25 year, government backed partnership, launched in 1985, to clean-up the rivers, streams and canals of England’s Northwest. It covers two river basins – the Mersey and the Ribble. There are 29 local authorities in the Mersey Basin.

Mersey Basin Campaign Objectives:
•    to improve water quality
•    to stimulate waterside regeneration
•    to raise awareness and engage the public and businesses in the process of improvement

The Mersey Basin Campaign works:
•    Locally, through a network of Action Partnerships
•    Regionally, across the Mersey and Ribble Basins
•    Nationally, as a government–backed partnership
•    Internationally, with 3 European projects

The Mersey Basin Campaign is one of the earliest organisations set up to create partnership working between the publicsector, the private sector and the voluntary sector. It has been a pioneer in this highly effective way of working.
