Agriculture and Forestry

Municipalities in the five regions developed resources to aid forest owners and farmers to take part in the implementation of the WFD and support regional development.

Landowners along specific water bodies have been encouraged to co-operate in so called “water-course groups”. Those groups are an opportunity for landowners to plan joint action to improve the water quality. These and other stakeholder groups have been asked to discuss the impacts of agriculture and forestry on surface and groundwater bodies, possible objectives and measures, the relation between  WFD and CAP, economic aspects, etc. Farmers and foresters, together with municipalities and water authorities took part in workshops, seminars, discussions and round table meetings to exchange their points of view and experiences and to better understand each other.

Municipal representatives and stakeholders (nature conservationists and others) have been educated in best practice in water management, in agriculture and forestry. Seminars focused on the opportunities of agriculture and forestry to support regional development and on how the WFD affects agriculture and forestry on:

nutrient pollution of surface water as well as groundwater
pesticide pollution of surface water and groundwater
effects of irrigation on water quantity in surface water and groundwater aquifers
protection and preservation of biodiversity in water bodies
  preservation of ecosystems
other forms of agriculture, new sources of income
cost-efficiency in water management and planning of measures.

For the outcome of the regional workshops, please take a look at the 5 regions sites.

Experiences and case studies have also been exchanged between partners and regional networks and have been published in a newsletter and in the Handbook.
